Troll arrived on Netflix on Dec. 1, and it was an instant hit. In its first week, the movie ranked at the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s non-English top 10 movie list with 75.86 million hours. This means that many people are tuning in to see what the fantasy film is all about. For the people who have already watched the movie, you’re probably wondering if there will be a Troll 2. As always, we got you covered!
Troll is a Norwegian Netflix original movie directed by Roar Uthaug from a screenplay he co-wrote with Espen Aukan. In addition, Uthaug, Aukan, and Kristian Strand Sinkerud produced it.
Uthaug had wanted to create something that was Norwegian folklore-inspired in the past but never got around to it. Eventually, Uthaug met with the production company Motion Blur, and Troll was officially greenlit. Now, years later, the fantasy film is out.
The story follows a group of people who team up to stop an ancient troll that was awakened by an explosion in the Norwegian mountains and prevent it from destroying the capital of Norway. The Troll cast includes Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Gard B. Eidsvold, Anneke von der Lippe, and many others.
As of Dec. 7, there is no word from Netflix on if there will be a sequel to the fantasy film. However, the movie’s creative team isn’t shooting down the idea of a second film. According to an interview with What’s on Netflix, Uthaug said he’s primarily focused on the first film, while producers Aukan and Sinkerud are open to a Troll 2. Uthaug and Sinkerud mentioned that in order to make a sequel happen, the response to the first film must be positive.
Well, it looks like they don’t have to worry about a positive response from critics because the film received generally positive reviews. However, they may have to worry about the low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Right now, it seems that there’s a mixed response from viewers.
Still, we believe there’s a good chance of a Troll 2 happening at Netflix. As long as Troll continues to bring in high viewership numbers throughout its first 28 days on Netflix, this should help its chances of getting the go-ahead for a sequel.
Obviously, there are other factors at play, like production costs. We’re not sure how much it cost to make Troll, but even if it was expensive to make, Netflix might look past costs and greenlight a sequel if the first film fares well.
With how things ended in the first film, there’s definitely more story that could be told in a sequel. Netflix just needs to greenlight a second film. Stay tuned to Netflix Life for updates on a potential Troll 2.
