The Monkey King is a kid-animated movie directed by Anthony Stacchi from a screenplay co-written by Steve Bencich, Ron J. Friedman, and Rita Hsiao. Like many other Netflix movies, it’s based on another piece of work. It’s based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en.

The film is set in ancient China and follows a rebellious egomaniac Monkey who was born from a large rock with magical powers. But his boldness and ego make him alienated from his peers and even his elders. Determined to become an immortal king, Monkey sets out on an epic quest with his magical fighting stick to battle tons of demons. But along the way, he meets a young humble village girl named Lin who not only teams up with him but challenges his self-centered attitude.
