Lauri Elias Markkanen (born 22 May 1997) is a Finnish professional basketball player for the NBA’s Utah Jazz (NBA). In the 2017 NBA draft, he was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Chicago Bulls for Jimmy Butler. He is the son of Pekka and Riikka Markkanen, two Finnish basketball stars, and the younger brother of footballer Eero Markkanen.
Markkanen grew raised in Jyväskylä and played for the local team, HoNsU, throughout his junior years.

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Markkanen with the seventh selection in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft. On draft night, his rights were dealt to the Chicago Bulls for Jimmy Butler and the rights to Justin Patton, along with Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn. Markkanen joined the Bulls on July 5, 2017.
Markkanen made his NBA debut with the Bulls on October 19, 2017, scoring 17 points. On October 24, Markkanen set an NBA record for most 3-pointers in the first three games of an NBA career, with 10. On January 10, 2018, Markkanen played a career-high 46 minutes, scored a career-high 33 points, and made a career-high eight 3-pointers in a 122-119 win over the New York Knicks in double overtime. This made him the second seven-foot player in history to hit eight three-pointers in a single game (the first being Dirk Nowitzki).
Markkanen had a career-high 17 rebounds against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 22. Four days later, Markkanen blocked three shots against the Los Angeles Lakers, tying a career-best.
