As we head into New Year’s weekend, many are likely looking forward to relaxing with loved ones and binging a few shows or marathoning movies. Netflix, per usual, has a wide variety of titles to check out during the holidays, including a dark comedy that just dropped called White Noise. The Noah Baumbach movie premiered in select theaters this November before coming to Netflix on Dec. 30. If you want to watch something unique and highly entertaining, we’d definitely recommend White Noise! I watched it in theaters and will probably watch it again from home now that it’s streaming.
Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig star in the movie which follows the two leads as a married couple in the Midwest. After an air contamination outbreak hits their town, otherwise known as “the Airborne Toxic Event,” the two must lead their family to safety. White Noise is based on the 1985 book of the same name written by Don DeLillo.
Hoping to check out White Noise this weekend but aren’t sure if you can watch it with kids around? Here’s what we know about the age rating and more!
White Noise has an official R rating, meaning it’s not for children. According to the MPAA ratings guide, a movie with an R rating should not be viewed by children under 17 years old unless a parent or legal guardian is present. While I wouldn’t categorize White Noise as graphic or obscene, there are adult elements featured such as some nudity, sexual references, mild violence, and language. There’s also drug use throughout, with one of the characters popping a mysterious pill and others trying to figure out what it is.
While White Noise was made for adults, I’d argue it’s fit for teenagers as well and even pre-teens, depending on the maturity level. The movie also includes serious conversations about topics such as death, though pretty mild.
Check out the trailer below if you’re interested in learning more about the film’s tone and storyline:
White Noise is now streaming on Netflix. You can also find three of Baumbach’s previous works, Marriage Story, Frances Ha, and The Meyerowitz Stories, on the streamer.
