Cher is an American singer and actress. Nicknamed the “Goddess of Pop”, she has sold over 150 million records. She has been significant in pop culture from the 1960s to date. She is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and elaborate stage performance.
Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946 to an Armenian-American father and actress Georgina Holt. Cher followed her mother’s footprints when she started performing at fifth grade. At the age of 16, she dropped out of school and went to Los Angeles. She met performer Sonny Bono and partnered with him to form a duo. Initially her singles were rejected by radio stations due to her deep voice.
In 1965, they released one of their biggest hits “I Got You Babe” and went on to release more songs together. In 1971, Cher and Sony launched their television show “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour”, it was an instant success with over 40 million weekly viewers. The show earned Cher a Golden Globe Award in 1974.

By the 1980s, Cher focused more on acting, she starred in the films Silkwood, Mask and Suspect. For her acting, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and earned as much as $1 million per film.

Cher is alive and still performing. She had taken up residency at Las Vegas and still performs her bold and elaborate choreography even at 76 years old.
