After winning the Miss Dominican Republic in 2002 at age 17, Amelia represented the Dominican Republic in the Miss Universe election held in Panama on the 3rd of June 2003.

She is the first Dominican, the youngest since 1994, and the tallest competitor to ever win the title at 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in).

Subsequently, due to her new title, she began traveling and participating in various events and organizations.
